屋久島 / Yakushima

屋久島は、冒険のいっぱい詰まった宝島。

Yakusima is like a treasure island with full of adventures.

山も海もあって、多様な動植物の生息する、人類の至宝と呼ばれる島。

言いえて妙なもので、屋久島での冒険は、宝探しにも似ていた。

そう、気分はトレジャーハンター！

This is an island called greatest treasure which because of mountains and beaches with  variety of animals and plants.

The adventure in Yakusima was like treasure hunting.

I felt I was a treasure hunter!

縄文杉トレッキング

(Trekking to Jomon-sugi, Japanese cedar aged over 1000y ears old)

今回の旅の目的である、縄文杉トレッキング！

元気のあるうちに行こうと言うことで、初日から登山！

残念ながら、快晴とはいかず。（また雨女パワーを発揮してしまった）

それでも歩いている途中に晴れ間が差し宝、

チャンス！と写真を撮って、はしゃいでいた。

序盤はな。

Trekking to Jomon-sugi was the main purpose of this trip!

We decided to go there on 1st day when we had enough strength.

It was not a beautiful weather unfortunately.

However, It was a bit sunny while we walked and I took many photos.

... only at the beginning.

延々と続くトロッコ道。

時々現れる手すりのない橋。

高所恐怖症ではないけれど、高いところにくると、

どうも目眩がした気になる。

もしそれで足がもつれたら・・・。

そうじゃなくても、もし今、強風が吹いたら・・・。

などなど、変な心配をしてしまうのでした。

Never lasting trolley rail.

Simple bridges.

I wasn't scared of height but I felt dizzy.

If I staggered...

If wind blowed strongly...

I was worried too much.

屋久島の森は、原始の森と呼ばれてるらしいんだけど

なるほど納得。

屋久島は雨が多く、南に位置するから、とても温暖多湿。

中間層の木々もよく育っているけど、何よりその多湿な環境のおかげか

苔がたーーーーくさん生えている。

視界がぜんぶ緑。

上も、前も、横も、下も。

There are many rainy days in Yakusima, and it is located in south of Japan

So it is humid subtropical climate.

Therefore, there are many mosses!

The world is full of green!

苔が作る小さなジャングル。

ここも誰かの立派な家なのかもしれない。

虫がア〜アア〜とかやって遊んでるかもしれない。

やっていないかもしれない。

A small jungle made by moss.

This might be a house of someone, something.

Insects may pretend like a Tarzan.

Maybe not. 

途中、陽が差してきて、ここぞとばかりに写真を撮りまくる。

この時、私は買ったばかりのNikon D330（だったかな？）を持っていたのだ。

D３３０なので、デミちゃんと呼んでる。

店員さんに、一眼レフは重くて持ち歩かなくなる人が多いので、

まずはミラーレスから始めたらいいと思います。

と、アドバイス（忠告）を受けたにも関わらず、

「シャッター切った時の音が良いから、一眼にします！」と心の中でつぶやき

結局重くて持ち歩かなくなった典型的なミーハーやろう。それが私。

It was sunny for a while so I took many pics!

At that time, I had DSLR camera which I bought for this trip.

(DSLR sounds like DS light, by the way...)

Staff at a camera shop said "most of beginners stop to use DSLR due to its heavy weight. I recommend to start with this mirrorless system camera first."

Even thought he gave me a good advice, I bought DSLR.

Because I like its shutter sound.

Then I stopped to use it after a while... as he said...

I am the one of typical beginner...

それにしても、トロッコのレールが、今や登山道になってるなんて

当時の人が聞いたらびっくりするだろうなあ。

このレール、作られたのは、なんと大正12年（1925年）。

日本で最後の森林鉄道だったそうな。

屋久島の立派な杉を切り出しては、せっせと運んでいたのね。

昭和44年（1969年）に運行は終了し、事業所は閉鎖。

結構最近まで手入れされていたからか、屋久島の森は明るい。

人の営みと、自然の営みが、うまく寄り添っていたんだろうな。

きちんとした計画のもと、森林からお裾分けをしてもらうことで

結果的に今の、人類の至宝と呼ばれる森が残っている。

ありがとう！と叫びたい。

（しかし当時はそんな歴史を知らなかったので、

　途中で見つけた鹿のモフケツを追っていた）

This trolley rail was established in 1925 which was the last trail which was used to transport timber in Japan.

It closed in 1969.

Forests in Yakushima is very bright because it is well maintained.

I thinks people lived with nature in a good distance.

They got trees and foods from the forests following a good plan.

Therefore, the forests is still beautiful as before.

I want to say Thank you! to people who kept this beauty.

(However, I didn't know about this history at that time.

 So I was just chasing fluffy deers' buttocks)

レールの上でのんきに葉っぱを食べる鹿に遭遇。

近寄ると逃げていくんだけど、逃げる方向が進行方向なもんで

結果的に鹿を追いかける形に。

鹿と散歩〜なんて後をついて歩いてたら、鹿が鳴き始めた。

すると友人が「母鹿呼んでるのかもよ。攻撃される前に行こう」と。

子を守る母は強し。

I saw a deer eating leaves on the trail.

When I reached it, it run away to the direction we went to.

We run after it unintentionally.

Then it cried and my friend said "it might call its mother.

We should leave here before its mom attack us."

Oops... I don't want to get injured...

The mothers are strong to save their kids, you know.

トロッコレールが終わると、

「準備は良いか？ここからが本番だ、小僧ども」とでも言いたげな

魔の階段地獄が始まる。

足の短い人は、余計に足を上げなきゃならないので、苦労する。

くそう・・・あと５センチ、背が高ければ・・・！

本当に疲れていたらしく、この後写真は全然ない。

メインの縄文杉の写真が、どこを探しても見当たらない。

覚えてるのは、ツアーガイドさんが「もののけ姫」に出てくる

「こだま」の人形と屋久島のタペストリーを

写真撮影用にと貸してくれたこと。

縄文杉に着いた時、雨が降り出したこと。

The stairs like a hell appeared after the trolley rail.

I felt like the stairs said "Are you ready? this is the main stage!".

My legs are not long, unfortunately.

This stairs' heights were not perfect and kind to me.

If I was tall 5 cm more...!

I didn't took any photos from this time, I guess I was super exhausted.

I couldn't find any pics of Jomon-sugi, our main purpose.

What I remembered is that

A tour guide lended us a doll of Kodama(a character of Princess Mononoke) and Yakushima's tapestry for taking nice photos.

Rain started when we arrived at Jomon-sugi.

帰り道は、土砂降りだった。

それでも霧に包まれた森を見ていると、

本当にしし神や、山犬が出てきそうでワクワクした。

これこそ屋久島の本当の姿だと！

（もののけ姫が一番好きな映画なの）

ま、そんな気持ちも、帰り道でべっちょべちょに、ふやかされたけども。

レンタルしたレインジャケットが洗ってねーだろと確信するほど、

臭かったもので・・・。

体臭とナイロンくささと生乾きな匂いっていうの？

甘んじて着たものの、どうしてもフードだけは被りたくなかった。

こんな臭い匂いに包まれたくない！

こんな素敵な森の中で！

そうすると何が起こるかって？

フードに溜まった水が、うっかり背中に流れ込んでくるんだよ。

つめてーのなんの。風邪引くわ！

It was heavy rainy on a way back.

But it was beautiful foggy and I felt like I was in the world of Mononoke.

It should be the true scenery of forests in Yakushima.

Well, then I was so annoyed because of rainy.

The smell of rain jacket I rented was terrible! so bad!

I put it on me but I couldn't put on a hood.

I couldn't stand up with that smell at all in a beautiful forest.

So water came into the cloth... Can you imagine how cold it was...?

トロッコ道に溜まる水。

レールの上を歩かないといけないんだけど、

このレールの幅がまた狭すぎたり遠すぎたり！

私の足の長さには、ちょっと中途半端。

（私の足の長さが中途半端なのか）

苦戦する私をよそに、足の長い友人は「先に行ってるよー」と

どんどんと進んでいき、

横断歩道よろしく上手にレールの上だけを歩いていく。

早っ。

足の長さはもうどうしようもないから、

次回はちゃんと防水靴を用意しようと思う。

帰り道で、ガイドを二人つけて、杖をついて歩くおじいちゃんとすれ違った。

そこには私は物語を感じたのだ。

あんなにヨボヨボになっても、ガイドを二人もつけて、

山小屋泊覚悟で登るほど縄文杉が見たいんだねえ。

素敵。

年齢なんて関係ないって思わせてくれた、ナイスおじい。

I was slow so my friend left me and waited at a goal.

Because I needed to walk on the rails to avoid pools but the length of my legs are not perfect on rails' distance...

I must prepare water proof shoes...

I saw a elder guy used sticks with two guides on the way.

He might have a story.

I was wondering why he want to see Jomon-sugi even though he knew it was very hard trip with sticks.

Where did his passion come from?

He taught me that age is no matter.

ところで、よく思うんだけど・・・

日本の観光サイトはもうちょっと英語のページを充実させたら良いと思うの。

I think they need to write more info in English.

無事に往復10時間の道のりを終えると、

山小屋でヒノキで作った箸置きをもらったよ。

ヒノキの香りたまらん〜〜。

階段が続いているとはいえ、どこが道なんだか、

木の根っこを超えていくときもあって、

ワクワクが止まらない縄文杉トレッキング。

しかし疲れた。

家帰ってすぐ寝た。

２回目はきっともうないだろう。

若さは体力とは違うのじゃ。

It took about 10 hours.

We got a small souvenir when we got back to a lodge at start point.

It was very exciting but I was so exhausted!

I don't think I will go to trekking again.

白谷雲水峡(Shiratani Unsui Kyo)

縄文杉よりも気に入った白谷雲水峡！

縄文杉トレッキングの翌日ということで、

私・友人共に筋肉痛がひどかったんだけど

晴れて気持ちの良い散歩ができた。

じゃあ、行ってみよう！

This is my favorite place more than Jomon-sugi.

We had muscle pain badly but we felt good because of sunshine!

美しい。

緑の世界。

縄文杉と違って標高差はそんなにないから、

比較的のんびりとハイキングを楽しめた（気がする）

（昔すぎてあんまり覚えてない）

This hiking was more easy than Jomon-sugi.

It was not so high(I guess)

江戸時代に作られた、石の道。

たまらん〜歴史を感じる自然が大好き〜

人の営みと自然の融合、最高。

必要以上に深呼吸して歩いちゃうわ。

怪しいわ。

This stone's road was made in Edo era.

I like this combination of nature and history.

I breathed deeply more than needed.

もののけ姫の舞台と言われた、苔むす森。

こんなに大きな岩たちが、例外なく苔に覆われてる。

こだまがいても、おかしくないね。

（実際こだまを見たら、ビビって逃げ出すと思うけど）

（何も知らずに出会ったら、若干ホラーな見た目と思う）

とにかく気持ち良いの一言。

道中では、別の登山客がイタチを見つけた。

振り向いたら、小さい沢が流れついて出来た水溜りのような場所で

イタチが水を飲んでいたらしい。

声にびっくりして逃げて行った。

このとき、白谷雲水峡はいろんな動物のすみかなんだなと

しみじみと実感した。

良いなあ、こんなに綺麗なお家。

100%ナチュラルじゃないですか。

苔の絨毯に、木の葉のベッド。

ふわふわして気持ち良さそう。

This is a model place of a movie "Princess Mononoke".

There is no wonder if Kodama exist.

(Although I would run away if I saw it. Its appearance is not so cute)

I can not say anything except Feeling super good!

A woman found a small animal on a way.

It was drinking water at a pool.

I realized that this forest is home for many animals and plants.

100% natural!

a carpet of moss and a bed of leaves.

How nice!

白谷雲水峡の頂上付近にある、大岩の見晴台。

モロが横たわってそうだな。

「黙れ、小僧！」って言われそう。

ここで持ってきた缶ビール（小）で、友人と乾杯。

運よく団体客が到着する前に辿り着けたから、

のんびりとランチを楽しんだよ。

それにしても高低差がないとか書いたけど、

結構高かったわ。頂上。

ちなみに黒い雲は、雨雲ではない。

その正体は、火山灰。

なんとこの日、隣の口永良部島が噴火した。

私たちは気付かなかったけど、別の登山者が

ドォンと爆発する音を聞いたらしい。

火山灰は、ものすごいスピードで流れていき、

すぐに空に溶けてしまった。

（その時は、とんでもない速さで消える雨雲だなとしか思ってなかった）

The mountain in island located next to Yakushima erupted while we walked.

A man told us that he listened a sound of explosion.

The gray cloud in the picture is not cloud.

It's volcanic ashes.

It melted into the sky so quickly.

I though it was a strange cloud til I heard about eruption.

それから、帰り道の記憶は、ほとんどない。

あれ？

白谷雲水峡は、縄文杉ほど道が整備されてなくて、迷いやすい。

自然の中を、最小限の足跡だけ残して歩くという意味では良いし

歩くのがとても楽しい。

だけど登山初心者の私一人で登ってたら、

確実に迷っていたと思う。

一緒に行った友人が、登山道マークのピンクのテープを確認しながら

先を歩いてくれたおかげで楽しめた。

それから沢がとても多いから、雨が降って増水すると渡れない事もあるみたい。

前日に雨が降ったから心配してたんだけど、

バッチリ楽しめてよかった！

It is easy to get lost for beginners like me.

There are tapes on trees to leads people but scenery is same.

Road is not well prepared like Jomon-sugi trekking.

But it is very nice to walk in truly nature.

There are many small rivers so people can not across those after rain.

It was rainy the day before though, we could go to the top!

ウミガメの産卵見学(Watching sea turtle's lay eggs)

白谷雲水峡を歩いた夜は、ウミガメの産卵を見に。

電話をして予約をとったら、待ち合わせ場所まで車で向かった。

友人は疲労困憊だったから、私一人で行くことに。

私も疲れてはいたけど、好奇心は疲れに勝るのだ。

After hiking in Shiratani Unsui Kyo, I went to the beach to watch sea turtle's lay eggs.

I needed to book by a phone.

I went there by myself because my friend was exhausted.

I was also exhausted but curiosity gave me a power!

今でも覚えてるのが、屋久島の道に街灯がないってこと。

街灯のない道を走ったのは初めてだったかも。

本当に真っ暗。闇闇闇。

車のライトを目掛けて飛んできては、

フロントガラスにぶち当たりバコバコ音がした。

とはいえライト無しには走れないので、

虫の亡骸を越えて私は進んだ。

There were no lights on the road. nothing.

completely dark.

So insects flied to the head lights of a car and hit on front glass.

I heard sounds of hitting. Sorry guys. I have no choice.

If I turned the lights off then I hit to something and die.

I kept going beyond your dead bodies, please forgive me!

このツアーは、ウミガメを守る団体が主催していた。

見学するタイミングは、ウミガメが穴を掘り終えて出産を始めてから。

そうじゃないと逃げてしまうんだって。

その日は、隣の口永良部島の噴火があったから

ウミガメは来ないかもしれないって言われていた。

なんってタイミングの日に来てしまったのか。

私は運が悪い方だから、見れないだろうなーと思ってたけど

ウミガメはいつも通り来てくれた。

係員さんの誘導の元、出産を始めたウミガメを人間がずらりと囲み

その様子を静かに観察する。

出産が始まっちゃえば、人が目の前に立っても出産を続けるウミガメ。

This tour was held by local volunteers.

We can't reach sea turtle before it starts lay eggs.

Otherwise it will escape.

We followed a staff and watched its lay eggs.

Once it starts lay eggs, it won't escape even surrounded by humans.

ウミガメママの掘った穴の深いこと！

どうやってあの手でここまで掘ったのか。すごすぎる。

出産が終わると、その穴に砂をかぶせはじめるママ。

その手の使い方が上手でねえ。

うまく砂をすくうのよ、あの手で。滑らかに。

うおお生命の神秘よ・・・。

でも何より衝撃を受けたのが、

穴を埋める途中で疲れて休憩するの！

ぜー、ぜーって荒れた呼吸を整えてから、

また砂をすくって、穴に落として、ペンペンと砂を固めながら埋める。

ママ・・・涙

I was impressed that it dig a deep hole...!

How could it dig a hole with that flat hands?

After lay eggs, it put sand on eggs with hands.

(legs?)

What a smooth motion...

But what I was most impressed was that it took a break!

dig a hole, lay eggs and cover those...

It should be hard work... yes, I didn't think so before watching.

Giving birth is not easy.

It was tired and took a break but never gave up.

mother...

命を繋ぐって、易しいことじゃないよね。

ウミガメも疲れるんだね。

でもやめないんだね。

そして無事に穴を埋め終わると、

のろい亀とは思えないほど、早いスピードで海へ帰って行きました。

見てよかった。

正直疲れていたし、ウミガメの産卵なんてな〜と思っていたけど

そんな自分をグーでパンチしてやりたい。

I was not sure if it was worth to watch it.

But if there's someone who can not decide if they need to watch it, I say yes!

It told me a mystery of lives without words.

I thought many things on a way back.

ところで、ウミガメのオスメスはどうやって決まるか知ってる？

それはね。

砂の温度さ！

孵化するまでの砂の温度が高ければメス、低ければオスなんだって。

卵が産み落とされた時には、まだオスメスわからないなんてね〜。

不思議〜。

こうして産み落とされた卵は、そのうち孵化して、

大海へと飛び出して行くんだね。

その様子も見てみたいけど、海に行く前に鳥に食べられる光景を見るのは辛い。

By the way, do you know how its gender is decided?

it depends on the temperature of sand!

It becomes female with high temperature and male with low temperature.

Some times ago those will go to the ocean.

I want to see it but I don't want to see that those are captured by birds before getting into the ocean... 

ウミガメのくる浜辺は、きちんと管理されてるんだよ。

なぜなら、卵の埋まってる砂地を踏み固めてしまわないために。

砂が固まってしまうと、ウミガメの赤ちゃんずは地上に出てこられないんだって。

そういう保護を、地元のボランティアさんたちがやっている。

とてもありがたい。

そしてそういう保護にお金を払い、活動に貢献しつつ、

自分も素敵な体験をさせてもらえて感謝。

The beach where sea turtles' do lay eggs is protected by volunteers.

Regulate not to enter a place where eggs are buried.

If people walk on that place, sand will be hard and baby turtles can not come up from sand.

I am pleased to pay for watching it to help their protection.

Because of them, I could have amazing experience.

首折れ鯖(Mackerel)

いろんな友人から、屋久島名物の首折れ鯖を食べた方が良い！

と言われていたので、

民宿に泊まっていた人と一緒に買いに行ったのさ。

首折れ鯖〜あるかな〜と話しながらスーパーをうろついていると、

GGI（じじい）が、不自然に引き返して、

最後の首折れ鯖のパックを手に取ったのだ。

・・・嫌がらせだな！？

その後、居酒屋で頼んで食べれたけれども。

食の恨みは怖いんだぞ。知ってるか？

私は超根に持つタイプなんだぞ。知らないだろ。

There is a special mackerel in Yakushima!

Many friends told me that I must have it.

So I went to a super market and looked for it.

Then a guy who passed through mackerel once but when he saw me sand a song of mackerel returned and got last one! Just in front of me!

You!

I never forget you...! Never Ever!

屋久島ドライブ(driving in Yakushima)

縄文杉と白谷雲水峡を巡った私たちは、正直やることがなくなった。

他にも登れる山はたくさんあるんだけど、登山初心者だし

疲れたしということで、島を１周ぐるっとドライブすることに。

ほぼ私が運転したから写真が全くない。

友人は助手席で寝てたから、写真が全くない。

私、結構タフなのかもしれない。

猿と鹿がたくさんいた。

車が近寄ってもビクともせず、動かん。

動かざること山の如しか。

時々、すれ違うのも難しいほど狭い道もあった。

小さい車だから良かったけど、ワゴン車は大変だろうな。

と思ったら、男女を乗せたワゴン車とすれ違った。

あいのりか。羨ましい。

There was nothing to do after went to Jomon-sugi and Shiratani.

There are more mountains to climb but we were tired so just drove around Yakushima.

I drove a car so no pics.

My friend slept most of time so no pics.

....

There were many monkeys and deers.

They didn't move at all even though the car was reaching.

They should think they are mountain.

Sometimes the road was very narrow.

It was difficult to pass each other.

I passed a car that young girls and boys were in.

... there must be a love story.

or something else. 

尾之間温泉(Osenoma hot spring)

地元の人に愛されているという温泉。

民宿で泊まっている人が教えてくれたので行ってみた。

入湯料200円。

昔ながらの温泉。

木造１階建で見た目はとっても古い。

中は銭湯っていうより、おばあちゃんちみたい。

I heard Osenoma onsen(hot spring) is loved by local people.

So I went there. The entrance fee was 200 yen. cheap!

It was very old. typical style hot spring.

It was more like my grand mother's house.

Relaxing.

温泉ていっても、広くない。

むしろ狭い。

そして、とんでもなく熱い。

どんなに我慢しても、足一本入れられなかった。

桶ですくって湯浴みするたびに、飛び上がる熱さ。

それもそのはず、なんとお湯の温度45度。

結局、湯船のそばに座って、湯船から溢れるお湯と

たまにかけ湯で楽しみましたよ。

そこに地元の人がやってきて、赤ん坊と一緒に肩まで浸かるもんだから

慣れってすげーなーと思ったぜ。

It is not big. rather small.

and super extremely hot.

I couldn't get into the hot water at all.

It was 45 degree.

I just sat down next to bath tub and pour hot water on my body sometimes.

Then local people came and she got into the tub with her baby.

Baby didn't cry. seriously?

They got used to it. wow.

以上、非常に楽しかった屋久島の旅。

写真が少ないけど、楽しさが伝わっていたらいいな。

Well, those are highlights of my trip in Yakushima!

屋久島へのアクセス：

Access to Yakushima from Kagoshima:

飛行機：　所要時間、約30分。

By airplane: takes about 30mins. 

高速フェリー：約2時間。片道9100円。

By express ferry: takes about 2 hours. 9,100 yen(one way).

check time schedule at following web site:

フェリー：　4時間。片道4900円。

１日１便、８：３０出発のみ。

By ferry: takes about 4 hours. 4,900 yen(one way).

There is only a ferry in a day which departs at 8:30 in the morning.

There's not English description though, attach the web site.

The fee of return trip is 4,000yen. so it costs 8,900 round trip.

It departs in Yakusima at 13:30 to back.

ウミガメの産卵見学については、下記ウェブサイトを確認してね。

check the following website to watch sea turtle's lay eggs, though not enough info in English.

There's no e-mail address. You can ask the staff at a hotel to book.

There are 2 sessions, one starts at 19:45. second one starts at 20:30.

both sessions are supposed to end at 23:00.

Max 30 people in a session.

you can book on the internet but there's no english.

If you want to try, I will give you some help below.

産卵１部 means session one.

産卵２部 means session two.

the number next to ”産卵１部、産卵２部” is available number of people.

There is no transportation to get the place.

You must drive a car or book a hotel which has a tour.

It costs 1,500yen/per person to join.

I am not sure if they have brochures in English (maybe not).

First watch a video of sea turtles and wait til sea turtle starts.

I guess most of staff can not speak English but they try!
